Got my new camera last week, which I have been fiddling around with it and testing it out. Also got my new 85mm f/1.8 lens a couple of days ago, which I'm also excited to try out! This is my 3rd prime lens, after the 50mm f/1.8 and the 28mm f/1.8. I absolutely love prime lenses. The quality of the photos are so amazing--at least they are compared to the shitty 18-55mm kit lens, and also the 55-250mm lens. Am making a trip to Singapore in a couple of weeks, so I'll get to test the 85mm out for real then! Will be hanging out at the SKKC AKU shows all day with my friend, Gaynor--I think it's gonna be lots of fun... mainly because I won't have to worry about showing/handling any dogs, and will have all the time in the world to take pictures!
Here are some of the photos that I've taken the past couple of weeks:
To be honest, I am very disappointed with the noise on the photos taken indoors in lower lighting. I was hoping that the upgrade in camera (from the Canon Rebel XSi to the Canon Rebel T2i, known in Asia as the 450D and 550D respectively) would help with noise reduction... but, it didn't. The indoor action shots were taken at f/2 (with the 85mm lens), shutter speed at 1/100 and at ISO1600 only. Still way too much noise!
I'm glad that this camera isn't officially mine, because then I'd be majorly PISSED off. (It was bought by my company) So I am looking into buying a new camera... still waiting for the successors to the 7D and the 60D to be announced because it's rumoured that they are going to be pretty revolutionary. They say that the new 60D (70D?) will replace the 7D, and that the new 7D will be upgraded to a full frame camera. We'll see! If the 70D does indeed replace the current 7D, that's what I'll be getting. Not sure if I will have much use for a full-frame camera.. and they are so bulky! However, I do covet the things that full-frame cameras offer, though. What I wouldn't give for a 5D MKIII!! I would never again have to curse at my camera freezing after it's taken 6 shots (in RAW) continuously, or the slow shutter speed, or the noise.
Anyway, back onto my review of the camera and lens... I'm going to put them to test for real when I go to Singapore. Hopefully I'll have time to get nice outdoor shots as well. Am itching to test of the capabilities of the 85mm! It is regarded as one of the best lenses made by Canon (even versus the L lenses), so it must be pretty damn awesome. So far, from my use, the autofocus is incredibly fast (just like the 28mm, and much, much better than the 50mm which really HUNTS, especially in low light), and it is really sharp. I just love the sharpness of prime lenses. I barely have to do any editing at all in Lightroom.
Wait up for my next photo dump post containing pictures from my trip! (Fingers crossed that the lighting will be decent at the show, and that I won't end up with shitty, noisy pictures)
