So yesterday, I found the blog of Starlark show dogs and spent the entire day admiring her Papillon, Dazzle. He is from the Caratoots kennel in Sweden. I have to say that he is just GORGEOUS! What a beautiful coat (for a dog that lives just nearby in Singapore!!), so much better than Cadence's. Cadence unfortunately lost most of his coat when we moved back here from Canada. =( He used to have the thickest, lushest coat that I loved so much (even though it made bathing him such a chore!)... but now it's just thin and kind of scraggly looking.
This is how much coat he had back in Canada.. and mind you, he's just a puppy here! Around 8 months of age, and he had SO much coat already.
Here's what he looks like these days.. =( See on the top of his body how his fur sticks up? I can't get his fur to grow any longer before he sheds them off! That's why you can see the ticking under his coat--in Canada, none of the ticking was visible unless he was being bathed.
Anyway, back on topic.. this is why I find it so amazing that a Papillon living in Singapore can grow so much coat! Here's a picture of him:
Isn't he JUST so pretty? Look at that amazing topline and beautiful ears! So huge, well set and fringed. I wish Cadence didn't have so much American line genes--he might be able to grow some fringe with more European blood in there! (He only has ONE European ancestor in 4 generations--a Hungarian import). Oh, and I also have a soft spot for red & white and sable dogs. They are my favourite colours!
After reading through the Starlark blog and looking at all the show pictures of Dazzle, I felt so sad because I want a show Papillon SO bad. Just look at his antics at the shows:
Those pictures show so well just WHY I love Papillons so much. They are such little packages of mischief! They're so spunky, so witty, and so incredibly smart. They are a terror to live with at times (just wait till I tell you some stories on how Cadence bullies Lyra--hides her toys where she can't get them because he's jealous!), but man, is life such a riot with a Papillon (or five!) around.
I know someone who owns five Papillons--one is perhaps the smartest dog I have ever, ever heard of. She is constantly outwitting everyone! One day she learned how to open the latch on her crate--she let herself out, and then went over to all the other dogs' crates and let them out too! Imagine the shock my friend had when she came home and ALL FIVE Papillons were standing around, staring at her.
Of course, Papillons aren't for everyone. Because they are so intelligent and high-energy, they get bored REALLY easily. Just check out the pairs of shoes and wires and furniture that Cadence destroyed as a puppy. I even have a friend whose Papillon chewed right through the drywall in her house! Imagine a 5lb dog doing that.
But oh man, are they such polar opposites from Cavaliers. Cavaliers are so sweet and adorable and cuddly. Papillons are like tornadoes and whirlwinds of activity! They do the funniest things and then stare at you with their "I'm innocent" eyes and ridiculously huge ears--you can never be angry at them for long.
Oh man, I need a show Papillon so badly!
